Tories, Timid, or True Blue
The online educational program Tories, Timid, or True Blue is designed to allow high school students to explore Revolution-era Boston from the point of view of an historian. Created for the Old North Foundation, the site provides online public access to much of the archival collection of Boston’s Old North Church, using carefully selected and digitized documents. The educational project aims to stimulate critical historical thinking by raising questions about what history is, how it is constructed, and who gets to have a say and why. The title refers to the central quandary of the Revolutionary era—whether to side with the British (Tories), stay out of the fray (remain timid), or join the rebels (true blue). In addition to providing a tool for educators, this project has made the church’s archives more broadly available to scholars interested in researching the history of the church and its role in the American Revolution.
