Asian Games Village
The Asian Games Village is designed to enhance Chinese language and culture study at MIT. Using an archive of video clips shot in the Asian Games Village residential area in Beijing, the project aims to create an authentic window into spoken Chinese. Students can “listen in” on Asian Games Village inhabitants to improve their comprehension skills and learn new vocabulary. At the same time, they acquire insight into current Chinese society and culture by exploring the multimedia materials. Clips include an interview with an old Beijing opera singer, video of children performing traditional Chinese dances, and scenes of early morning group exercises. Students can combine clips in any way they choose to investigate such questions as: what is the role of the Communist Party in China today? and, what is changing for inhabitants? Site materials are commonly used to seed class discussions.
